Just Launched on our Website: Our 2nd Intermediate Online Course: "Officer Involved Shootings"

Introducing our second CPCA Intermediate online course for CPCA members and non-members: Officer Involved Shootings. A member involved shooting has significant impact on entire Police Departments. This course has one major objective: to provide a meaningful answer to the question: “How do Chaplains best engage after a Member Involved Shooting?” There is a process that will unfold in all member involved shootings and the better a Chaplain knows and understands the process the more natural it will be for her or him to be helpful. This process will involve both the legal/investigative side of the incident and the official trauma support side.

The presenter of this course is RCMP Southeast District Chaplain/Dr. Tim Schroeder. Tim has been engaged with the RCMP as either an Auxiliary Constable and/or Chaplain for more than 25 years. His initial involvement was with the Kelowna, BC Detachment. Since 2020 he has been Southeast District Chaplain in “E” Division serving 44 Detachments and more than 1000 police personnel. The impetus for this course came from an unfortunate set of circumstances in which he found himself engaged in 7 member involved shootings in a short period of time.

This course is not offered from the perspective of psychological expertise, but rather from learnings accrued by “being there.”

The foundation for the development of this course is a video recording of an interactive presentation facilitated by Dr. Tim Schroeder during the National Training Seminar in Vancouver in October of 2025. The video has been incorporated into a lesson plan to prepare a chaplain to meet the challenge of responding and serving appropriately and effectively when officers have been involved in a shooting. The video includes two separate interviews with RCMP officers who survived these situations; the officers provide insightful feedback regarding the process they went through, along with advice to chaplains based upon their lived experiences.

The Officer Involved Shooting course falls under the "crisis" category of our CPCA Academic Standards, and is the second of six future online Intermediate courses that are being developed between now and 2028. Persons who successfully complete this course (includes a quiz requiring an 80% passing grade), will receive a CPCA certificate, credit towards achieving Basic Credentials, and a credit of training hours on their training record. The average time frame for completion of this course is between 2 - 3 hours. It may be completed in intervals in accordance with the time availability of the participant.
