Today in St. Thomas at the annual OPP West Region Awards Ceremony, OPP Chaplain Vic Gayed was presented the Commissioner's Commendation for Peer Support of Excellence.

OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique personally presented Vic with the prestigious award, "in recognition of his exceptional commitment to supporting the mental health and well-being of a member of the Ontario Provincial Police's Oxford Detachment, and their family, following the recent loss of their four-year-old daughter. Chaplain Gayed supported the family throughout the grieving process, remaining actively involved at every stage from providing compassionate guidance and emotional support to officiating at the funeral. His steady presence and thoughtful care brought comfort and reassurance, ensuring the family felt supported and understood during their most difficult moments. He also extended this support to members of the Oxford Detachment who were deeply affected by the tragedy."

On a personal note, I first met Vic at the 2015 CPCA ATS in Peterborough, ON. Both Vic and I were new members with the CPCA, and were zealous about receiving training that would help us to serve law enforcement officers and their families. We connected throughout the week, enjoyed our sessions, and shared company at the Thursday evening banquet. I instantly took to Vic appreciating his heart of love and respect for police officers, which he noticeably extended towards me through his expressions of encouragement and edification. He was humble, kind, caring, sincere and funny. I recalled thinking how much I would appreciate if he were my police chaplain, and how blessed the officers in the police service were where he served. With each ATS, that sentiment grew stronger, so I was very sad when he told me he had embarked on a new adventure and had to sideline his commitment to police chaplaincy.

Years later, Vic was back with a new start through the OPP. I was thrilled and it was so good to reconnect with him at a CPCA ATS, followed by a home visit the next year while Vic and his wonderful wife Debbie were touring across Canada. God has filled this man with a heart of love and service towards police officers, chaplains, and all mankind. If you plan on attending our CPCA NTS in Toronto October 18 - 22, 2027, you must make a point of meeting and spending time with this incredible man; Vic is a true blessing to the Body of Christ and to all who have met him and know him.

On behalf of the CPCA Executive and National Leadership Team, heartfelt congratulations to you Vic on your Commendation and to Debbie who deserves recognition for the many ways she loves, encourages, supports, and strengthens you. How fitting it is to see Debbie's reflection on the glass frame Vic is holding in the top photo. Amos 3:3, "Can two walk together, except they be agreed?"
