Crime Scene Etiquette

Presented by: Chaplain/Rev. Bruce Ewanyshyn BA. Bruce served for over 20 years of a 33-year distinguished career in law enforcement as a Specialist in a Forensic Identification Unit. During his final nine years in law enforcement, he also served as the police agencies' chaplain. Bruce has qualified as an Expert Witness in various Provincial and QB Court trial proceedings. He has been an instructor of numerous subject matters to police officers since 1994, and has authored and currently presents a two-week course to various police agency recruit classes on, "Forensic Crime Scene Management for Frontline Officers." Course Description: Advance preparation will reduce the stress a chaplain will experience when asked to enter a crime scene to provide support to officers. Understanding crime scene protocols will protect a chaplain physically and operationally so that your attendance will be a benefit to the officers and not a hindrance. What is the extent of a chaplain's role within a crime scene, and how should a chaplain respond when questioned by the Media? This course seeks to provide chaplains with a basic understanding of the dynamics of crime scene protocol. After completing this course, learners will: 1. Be familiar with Locard's Exchange Principle. 2. Identify the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for use within a crime scene. 3. State the order of donning and the order of doffing. 4. Know what to avoid making physical contact with, and how to proceed if contact occurs. 5. State how to prevent becoming a hindrance and a casualty. 6. Be familiar with actions deemed prohibited in accordance with crime scene protocol. 7. Know how to deal with Media. 8. List some practical ways to support officers at crime scenes. 9. Be familiar with the extent of a chaplain's role at a crime scene. 10. Evaluate their ability to work through a situation based upon a fictious role assessment scenario.
